Smooth(ie) Talk

Smoothies have always been a favorite of mine – they’re such a convenient way to jam-pack a single beverage with a ton of nutrients. I’m always randomly craving them, and that’s probably my body’s subtle way of begging for sustainable ingredients, LOL. They’re also one of the easiest drinks to make – there’s no exact science involved with smoothes. You can pretty much throw in whatever is left in your fridge, and they’re a great way to use up your produce before it goes bad.

Today was a smokin’ 100° (can this heat wave please end?!?!), and I needed something cool and sustainable. My roommate recently got a blender, so I decided to try it out today. Now, I’m aware a lot of people have an aversion to textured smoothies, but because I’m generally trying to make it a health drink, I really couldn’t care less about the consistency. Greg, on the other hand, is quite picky with his smoothies (his words, not mine), so I made him a simpler one. Here’s what went into each:

Mixed Berry & Banana Smoothie (Greg’s)
– 1 cup organic frozen strawberries
– 1/2 cup organic frozen mixed berries
– 1 organic banana
– 1 cup almond milk

Blueberry & Apple Green Smoothie (Mine)- 1/4 leftover ‘Mixed Berry & Banana Smoothie’- 2 cups organic spinach
– 1 small organic apple
– 1 organic banana
– 1 tsp organic maca root powder
– 1 cup almond milk
– 1/2 cup organic frozen blueberries

When blending, I usually put the liquid in the blender first (in these cases, it was almond milk), the dry ingredients, and then the frozen ingredients – this seems to be less harsh on the blender. I then switch from blending to pulsing, to give the frozen ingredients ample opportunity to break down. Some people use ice in their smoothies, but I’ve never been a fan. I personally think it waters the smoothie down.

And there you have it! 2 healthy, refreshing smoothie options for your next heat wave. I usually throw mine in mason jars and use glass straws (a win for both the environment and your teeth). Enjoy!

Truly,
Taylor
